Press

On this page we are collecting our very own press archive. It will include any interviews we give, work by other people which references us and press mentions we get. If you want to give the WLM Music Archive some media coverage, we’d be very happy – please let us know so we can add you to this page!

August 2023: Our friend Marlene Schnedl – a freelance music editor mainly in the fields of jazz, free improvised music, experimental music and more at the public broadcaster – ORF – in Austria at Radio Österreich Eins (Ö1), whose main focus for years has been on female musicians, composers and feminist artists, found the archive this year and was impelled to create ‘a programme or possibly a series, about the archive and the fantastic female musicians.’ info on the program, in German, is below, with the llink:

Darunter u.a. Abandon Your Tutu, Bad Habits, Bright Girls, Feminist Improvising Group, Frankie Armstrong, Friggin’ Little Bits, Ginger and Spice, Jam Today, No Rules OK, Proper Little Madams, Sadista Sisters, Siren, Stepney Sisters.

Gestaltung, Marlene Schnedl

In a Guardian Comment Is Free article on 26 June, 2013, Anya Pearson conducts a clever experiment to visually represent the issue of gender inequality in music by editing the posters of ‘some of Britain’s best-loved festivals deleting all the acts with no female members … The results are as striking as they are shocking: blank spaces flood what would otherwise be a crowded list of artists.’ And she provides a link to the archive, as her mother is a member of the much-loved Stepney Sisters. Thank you Anya!

  1. Dear fantastic founders,
First of all, I must express my great respect for this unique work. This incredible, painstakingly compiled archive has been around for 12 years and I only recently came across it; I spent almost a whole day studying all the entries in detail.
I work as a freelance music editor mainly in the fields of jazz, free improvised music, experimental music and more at the public broadcaster – ORF – in Austria at Radio Österreich Eins (Ö1). My main focus is on female musicians, composers, feminist artists.
I’m going to do a radio programme about the archive, that’s for sure!
