Music & Liberation – Exhibition

Music & Liberation, an exhibition about Women’s Liberation Music Making in the UK (1970-1989), is being supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Music & Liberation: Women’s Liberation Music Making in the UK, 1970-1989 will show how feminists used music as an activist tool to entertain and empower women during the 1970s and 1980s. It brings together for the first time a diverse collection of women’s cultural heritage to inspire and inform contemporary audiences about the politics of music making.

Centre of image is a picture of the York Street Band playing on the street. Ros is dancing with an older woman joyously as Anthea and Sarha play and dance in the background. The photo is framed by lavender blocks of colour, and wavy black lines. The text says 'an exhibition about music and activism in the UK Women's Liberation Movement'. Logo top right hand corner.

The grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund was announced in January. It will be spent on a touring exhibition visiting the following venues:

The HLF grant will pay for the high quality digitisation of audio and audio-visual material including live performances, studio recordings, practices and TV appearances of Women’s Liberation music makers. A CD album of music included in Music & Liberation will be produced, and ten new oral histories collected. The music, films and oral histories will be available to watch and listen to at the exhibition. Ephemera and artefacts such as posters, songbooks, t-shirts, instruments and fliers will also be displayed.

Music & Liberation will draw on, and collect new material for, the Women’s Liberation Music Archive, an online blog launched in May 2011 by Frankie Green and Dr Deborah Withers.

Material collected as part of Music & Liberation will be deposited in the Glasgow Women’s Library and the Feminist Archive South to ensure they can be accessed by future generations.
